When the New Year comes around, what kind of resolutions do you make? You typically look for ways to improve your relationships, health, career, and many parts of your life. You can also do the same thing to make driving more efficient, cost-effective, and fun. Glockner Honda would like to help with these suggestions for New Year's resolutions for your car.

1. End distracted driving.

In 2019, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving killed 3,142. And you already know that this problem is exemplified by talking on your smartphone while you're behind the wheel. But were you aware that the following can also cause distracted driving?

·         Changing music on your audio system

·         Fiddling with a GPS map

·         Eating and drinking

·         Grooming, such as putting on makeup

Make it a resolution this year to avoid all forms of distracted driving and to put your full attention on the road. Your family, friends, and workmates will be grateful that you show up in their lives every day.

2. Keep the interior clean.

You keep the exterior of your vehicle spotless by regularly taking it to the car wash. So why is the interior a mess? Give the inside a thorough clean at the beginning of the year and then cultivate that habit daily.

Start by removing everything from your vehicle including that collection of children's toys, old papers, and accessories like air fresheners that you're not using. Then vacuum the seats and floor, and wipe down the panels and the interior of windows.

Return items to the vehicle that you need, such as the owner's manual, insurance card, and registration. A folder or small envelope can help gather lose papers. If your kids want to bring toys, have a small box that you can store them in.

Add a small trash can in the front. Line it with a plastic shopping bag. You now have a place to throw things in. When the shopping bag gets full, take it out of your vehicle and replace it with an empty one. Then throw the filled bag away.

3. Prepare an emergency kit.

If your car breaks down and you need to either wait for help or go get it, having an emergency kit can either help you out of trouble or keep you comfortable while you wait. Create one by putting the following items in a backpack that you can easily take with you if needed.

·         Jumper cables to jumpstart a dead battery.

·         Flashlight with extra batteries to help you find things in the dark.

·         First-aid kit to tend to minor injuries.

·         Warning devices such as flares and orange triangles

·         Multi-tool to make minor mechanical repairs.

·         Can of Fix-a-Flat to take care of flat tires.

·         Non-perishable snacks and water to keep you satisfied.

·         Duct tape and cable ties to temporarily secure loose items.

·         Seasonal items such as mittens, blankets, hand warmers, and ice scrapers in the winter, and sunblock, wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses for the summer.

4. Check the tires.

Tires are easy to ignore until they go flat. But you can avoid any problems with them by doing some basic checking whenever you fill up. Examine the treads to make sure they're deep enough. If they seem shallow, insert a US penny in a tread, head first. If you can see most of Lincoln's head, then your tire has minimal traction and needs replacing.

Your Tire Pressure Monitoring System will tell you when you need air. If you don't have one, check the air manually using a tire gauge that you buy at an auto parts store or is part of the air pump at any gas station. Your recommended air pressure will be listed on the driver's-side door jamb or in the owner's manual.

5. Don't forget scheduled maintenance.

After a few years of ownership, you can easily forget that your vehicle still needs regular maintenance to stay in good shape. You can check your owner's manual for the intervals between different inspections and replacements. If you take your vehicle to the Service Department at Glockner Honda, it will be taken care of by factory-certified mechanics who use manufacturer-vetted parts.
